Music Ministry“My heart is steadfast,
O God; I will sing and make music with
all my soul." Under the direction of our Minister of Music, Rev. Jim Bell, we have an active and highly acclaimed Music Ministry with vocal choirs, a handbell ensemble and a range of instrumental ensembles, all of which perform a varied repertoire, including music for Sunday worship services. We also sponsor an annual Concert Series featuring local and international talent. One of our most popular events is our annual December performance of the Christmas portion of Handel’s Messiah with full orchestra and chorus, the only such presentation of its type in a church setting in Atlanta. Our beautiful sanctuary also contains two magnificent concert-quality organs. See the remainder of this page for a more detailed description of the offerings of our ministry. Come join us and make a joyful noise to the Lord! The Music of Peachtree Christian ChurchSince its founding in 1925, one of the great strengths of Peachtree Christian Church has been a dynamic music ministry. Blessed with a sacred space that is not only visually stunning but also possesses exceptional acoustic qualities, the music of Peachtree has always been a strong and vital component of our worship experience. Today our commitment to music and its place in worship is as strong as ever. We encourage you and your family to take full advantage of our church’s rich musical heritage and to join us in the study and making of beautiful music. It will change your life and heighten your worship experience at Peachtree Christian Church. Adult Music MinistryThe Sanctuary Choir is a soprano-alto-tenor-bass (SATB) choir that provides choral music for the 11:00 a.m. worship service each Sunday. From September through May they rehearse every Wednesday evening from 7:30 - 9:00 p.m. and provide a wide variety of music ranging from major oratorios with orchestra to a cappella spirituals. There is no audition requirement; however, a prior knowledge of singing and sight-reading is helpful. The Handbell Choir is a select ensemble that presents handbell music for five octaves. Sight-reading and musical background are required. From September through May they rehearse each Wednesday evening from 6:30 - 7:30 P.M. and perform approximately once each month for the 9:00 and 11:00 A.M. worship services. The Keenager Choir is comprised of senior adults who love to sing. They rehearse the second and fourth Wednesdays of every month at 4:30 P.M. Their repertoire consists of hymns, anthems and popular songs from the 1920’s to the present. No prior musical experience is necessary. The Singing Men of Peachtree is a group of men who love to sings the hymns of the church. They rehearse the fourth Sunday of every month at 8:30 A.M. and provide music for the 9:00 A.M. service that same morning. No prior musical experience is necessary. The Concert Series presents a wide variety of programming to include organ recitals, solo instrumental and chamber music concerts, vocal recitals and major choral works with orchestra. Local and international talents are showcased and presented in the sanctuary of Peachtree Christian Church, celebrated as one of the most beautiful and acoustically perfect sanctuaries in America. The organ in the sanctuary of the Peachtree Christine Church is actually two separate organs. The Mimms Chancel Organ is the original sanctuary organ and was constructed by Henry Pilcher's Sons of Louisville, Kentucky in 1928. The instrument is typical of that era and contains many orchestral imitative voices as well as broad-scale principal choruses. In 1957 the Pilcher console was retired and a new console built by the Austin Organ Company was installed. The Collins-Williams Gallery Organ was built by Fratelli Ruffatti of Padua, Italy and was installed in 1974 during a time when historic concepts of organ design and construction were being re-discovered. The voicing of this organ is a synthesis of North German Baroque and American Classic traditions and the installation includes a free-standing Ruckpositiv division located on the gallery rail behind the console. The two organs were reconciled in 1992 by Solid State Logic of London, England so that they may be played separately, antiphonally or in tandem from the gallery console. Recent tonal and mechanical revisions and additions to both instruments by Daniel Angerstein of North Carolina and Walker Technical Company of Pennsylvania have made the installation one of the largest and most unique in the country.
